JENKS, OK—Miller Swim School will host a grand opening celebration April 26-28 at its new location serving Jenks and surrounding communities at 525 W. 91 St. S.
Larry and Rita Miller started Miller Swim School in 1960 with summer lessons in a neighborhood pool, then quickly grew to utilizing various junior high and high school pools across Tulsa for lessons. They opened Miller’s current facility on south Mingo Road in 1995 and are excited to expand in Jenks.
“Our goal at Miller Swim School has always been to provide the families in Tulsa with the best possible swim lessons,” Miller said. “We’ve tailored our program to meet the needs of our community. As Tulsa has grown, we’ve been blessed to grow as well. And as second and third generation families moved to new growth areas, they’ve asked us to move with them.”
The celebration weekend kicks off Friday, April 26 with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. inside the new 8,400 square foot facility. Speakers include founder Larry Miller, former Olympian and sports announcer, Rowdy Gaines, Jenks mayor Dr. Josh Wedman, Jenks Chamber of Commerce president Josh Driskell, Tulsa County Commissioner Karen Keith and former Jenks mayor Vic Vreeland.
“Miller Swim School is a longtime Tulsa-area business. It’s exciting to see them continue to grow, especially into a market as exciting as Jenks. I know they’ll be a great addition to the community,” Keith said.
On Saturday, April 27, the weekend continues with a swim clinic facilitated by Rowdy Gaines from 1 to 3 p.m. Gains is a American former competitive swimmer, U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame member, three-time Olympic gold medalist and a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Limited spots are available. Community members are also welcome to attend as spectators.
The celebration culminates with a carnival Sunday, April 28 from 2 to 5 p.m. Miller invites students and their families as well as community members to this open house event to explore the space and enjoy inflatables, pony rides, food trucks, prizes and giveaways. Advertising trade-outs are available for local businesses to feature their literature or branded items in favor bags for all attendees. “We hope that this new facility will allow us to meet the needs of the next generation of children. Swimming is a life skill and lifesaving skill and creating a fun safe environment for teaching will empower families to enjoy the water worry free. We couldn’t be more excited to provide these skills for the families of the greater West Tulsa area, Jenks and surrounding communities.” Miller said.
The facility will house a 1,920 square foot pool filled with 50,000 gallons of water, complete with a built-in ledge for swimmers to safely stand on during class. Friends and family may watch students through the floor-to-ceiling glass viewing area sized at 650 square feet. In addition to the swimming and viewing areas, the facility will feature a comprehensive pro shop, a specified area for infant and toddler classes, 14 individual dressing rooms and men’s and women’s separate dressing areas, and over 90 parking spaces. The facility will be handicap accessible and environmentally-friendly and will utilize a UV filtration system.
